Rare 1963 Topps Mickey Mantle Plaque Premium

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $5,036.25

Presented is one of the most unusual and rarest Mickey Mantle items to ever be issued: The 1963 Topps Mickey Mantle premium plaque. We have referred to this as a Topps premium in the title because that is how it is universally known and listed in guides. Legend has it that this rare Mantle item was offered as a mail-in premium by Topps and was advertised on its high-number series wax-pack wrappers. We are not 100% certain this legend is accurate, simply because we have never seen a wrapper advertising this item, or any other period reference. It may very well have been issued by Topps. This is only the second example of this rare plaque that we have ever offered (the first was sold as lot #933 in the 2012 REA for $5,288) and is now just the third example that we have ever seen. One of the great early dealers in rare cards and memorabilia was Tom Collier (interesting note: the initials of card manufacturer "TCMA" originally stood for founders "Tom Collier Mike Aronstein"). Aside from this example and the one from last year, the only other example that we have ever seen was shown to us over thirty years ago by Tom Collier from his personal collection. For what it's worth, Tom Collier told us it was a cereal premium. However it was issued, it is an incredible rarity! The premium is actually an embossed, plastic plaque (6 x 8 inches) which was designed to look like a framed picture. The plaque is also easily damaged and a natural condition rarity. This example has the small holed tab that allowed for easy hanging fully intact on the top edge (last year's example was missing). The only imperfections we can find are a tiny split in the lower left corner and two very small splits on the perimeter of the "frame" (visible only when looking from the side). Otherwise, this plaque is flawless and in excellent condition, which is truly remarkable for this item given its age and fragile nature. This is a very rare and unusual Mickey Mantle premium, dating from the early 1960s, that is on many want lists and would be a highlight item in any advanced Mickey Mantle collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,036.25
