1888 N172 Old Judge James Mutrie - Portrait

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $533.25

Particularly rare and distinctive N172 portrait pose of legendary New York Giants manager James Mutrie. This is an extremely rare card in the Old Judge set, as well as an extremely desirable portrait card. There are very few portraits in the N172 Old Judge series (a total of only thirty-nine portrait poses featuring thirty different subjects, including many rarities). Because they are so distinctive, collectors have always gravitated toward them. This card is one of the highlights from a larger collection of N172 cards which we have broken down into several smaller lots in the auction. Mutrie was always well known for his fine dress and immaculate grooming, both of which are clearly evident on his Old Judge baseball card. One of the leading figures in the game in the 1880s, Mutrie led the prominent New York club to three championships during that decade. The card has outstanding contrast, a few minor creases near the edges (none of which affect the image), two small areas of surface abrasion on the right border, and evenly rounded corners. A slight trim along the top edge is responsible for the card not being assigned a numerical grade by SGC. Without reference to this, the card is in technically Good condition and, most important (as can easily be seen), this card has outstanding eye-appeal. This is an extremely rare N172 Old Judge pose normally found in only the most advanced N172 collections. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $533.25
