1954 Red Man Tobacco #1 Richie Ashburn SGC GEM 98

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $414.75

Graded GEM 98 by SGC. The highest-graded example on record between SGC and PSA with only one MINT 9 from each company coming close. Absolutely stunning, remarkably crisp, ultra high-grade example of Richie Ashburn, Philadelphia Phillies star and one of the key Hall of Famers from the 1954 Red Man Tobacco set. Bright, crisp, perfectly clean, with a striking color, four razor-sharp corners, and a flawless reverse with bold green printing. Red Man Tobacco cards are far rarer than most 1950s baseball cards. Because of their tabs (which were designed to be cut) and method of issue, they often have condition problems, and are rarely seen in such high grade. Many consider them to be among the most beautiful cards ever issued, and to represent one of the best values of all cards from the era. The equivalent SMR value for a MINT 9 (the highest grade for which SMR is available) is $1,500. This card is a first-generation SGC grade, dating to the early days of the company, and cannot be guaranteed to cross into their newer label at the same grade, though it may very well do so and to our eye appears worthy of its GEM MINT grade in any holder. This is a simply outstanding ultra high-grade example of this striking and unusual Ashburn card dating from the early 1950s. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $414.75
