1951 Topps "Red Backs" Complete Uncut Panel Set (26 panels, 52 cards)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,659.00
The "Red Backs" set is extremely significant as this was one of the first major baseball-card sets ever issued by Topps. Presented is an extraordinary complete set (fifty-two cards) of this landmark issue, in its rarest and most desirable original uncut two-card panel form. The 1951 Topps "Red Backs" were issued in both individual one-card packs, and also in perforated two-card panels with the 1951 Topps Connie Mack All-Stars and 1951 Topps Team cards. It is very rare to see even a single surviving uncut panel of "Red Backs". The two-card panels were designed to be separated along the perforations, and few panels survived this fate, let alone a complete set of twenty-six two-card panels. This is a very attractive set, presenting in mostly Nr/Mt-Mt condition but technically grading slightly lesser due to very tiny surface factory wrinkles that are natural to the set and related to production. Keys: #1-26 Berra/Easter (Ex), 5-16 Rizzuto/Roe (Vg), 6-31 Reynolds/Hodges (Ex-Mt), 15-35 Kiner/Rosen (Ex+), 19-50 Kokos/Irvin (Vg-Ex), 20-40 DiMaggio/Garcia (Ex+), 22-52 Feller/Holmes-Hartford (Ex-Mt), 29-39 Kennedy/Kluszewski (Ex), 30-46 Spahn/Goodman (Ex), 38-45 Snider/Seminick (Ex+). Each of the remaining sixteen panels is bright and crisp with exceptional eye-appeal but technically grading mostly Ex to Ex-Mt due to the previously mentioned naturally occurring factory wrinkles. Three cards grade lesser (two due to creases and one due to small traces of color added on the reverse). "Red Backs" are one of the most significant of all early 1950s gum issues. This set represents Topps' first major effort in the baseball-card business. Very few complete sets exist in the original uncut two-panel form. This is an extremely attractive complete set of this first Topps set featuring numerous highlights. Total: 26 panels representing 52 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,659.00
