1952 Wheaties Tin Tray Jackie Robinson - Flat Proof!

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,777.50

Presented is a very rare - and possibly unique! - Wheaties Tin Tray "proof" of Jackie Robinson. Issued in 1952 with boxes of Wheaties cereal, the self-framed metal premiums in this set feature color images printed on tin of four great stars of the day: Kiner, Musial, Rizzuto, and Robinson. Each premium is designed with the photo appearing to be "framed" (the frame is part of the design and is punched to create the effect of a 3-dimensional frame, with a hole at the top to allow for hanging). Each premium was issued attached to the back of a Wheaties cereal box (by glue) as part of the promotion, as opposed to being packaged inside the cereal box. This is why the 1951 Wheaties Tins always have glue and paper reside on their backs. The offered "proof" of Jackie Robinson has not been "punched" to create the surrounding frame. Obviously, it has been cut from a metal proof sheet by someone involved in the production of the set. We have never seen another proof example from the set. The proof appears different than issued tins as it lies perfectly flat (the surrounding frame when punched involves the borders being "raised" giving the issued tins essentially a three-dimensional quality). The Wheaties proof, which measures 5 x 6 inches, is extremely attractive, featuring Robinson in a vibrantly colored batting follow-through with a facsimile signature near the bottom. Faint surface scratching is present on the front, most noticeable under close inspection, along with two minor bends in the naturally flimsy tin stock. Of special note: For some unknown reason, Jackie Robinson is an extreme rarity in this series. Most consider the set complete at three because the Jackie Robinson tin is so rare. (We've never even had one to offer before and have only seen a couple over the years). We can't help but wonder if the extreme rarity of the issued Robinson tin is somehow related to the fact that this proof happens to be of Jackie Robinson. This is an extremely fascinating (and possibly unique) example of one of Jackie Robinson's rarest promotional collectibles and the key rarity in the 1952 Wheaties Tin Tray premium set. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,777.50
