1949 Bowman #84 Roy Campanella PSA MINT 9

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $9,480.00

Graded MINT 9 by PSA. This is an incredible ultra high-grade example of Roy Campanella’s rookie card, which is also one Campy’s most striking and popular cards. Only sixteen 1949 Bowmans of Campanella (out of 794 graded) have ever received a grade of MINT 9 from PSA, with only two graded higher. 1949 Bowmans have always posed a problem for condition-conscious collectors. In addition to the many normal problems encountered with this issue (excessive toning, general wear from fragile paper stock, soft corners, centering issues, and print lines), collectors also have to deal with the wildly varying degrees of print quality that characterize the set. It is easy to see why 1949 Bowmans are one of the most difficult of all issues to collect in high grade. The offered example has a perfectly crisp image, with flawless registration, and crisp, perfect off-white borders with only a trace amount of toning along the top edge. Perfectly clean front and back, with four razor-sharp corners, and near-perfect centering. The portrait of Campy practically jumps off the bold, orange background. Pack-fresh, crisp, ultra high-grade example of one of Campanella’s most classic cards, worthy of the finest world-class Hall of Fame or 1949 Bowman PSA Registry collection. SMR value is $5,000. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+.
