1949 Bowman Complete Set (240 plus 8 variations)

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $14,220.00

Extremely attractive 1949 Bowman complete set of 240 cards plus eight variations for a total of 248 cards. The 1949 Bowman issue is highlighted by several key Hall of Fame rookie cards, including those of Satchell Paige, Duke Snider, and Roy Campanella. Consigned to this auction by the original owner, many of these cards are as bright and crisp as the day they were pulled from packs. We have selected seventeen cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Bickford (Gd/Vg), 11 Boudreau (Ex), 23 Doerr (Vg), 24 Musial (EX/NM 80), 26 Kell (Ex), 27 Feller (NM+ 86), 29 Kiner (Vg+), 33 Spahn (NM 84), 36 Reese (NM 84), 46 Roberts RC (GOOD 30), 50 Robinson (NM 84), 60 Berra (VG/EX+ 55), 65 Slaughter (NM/MT 88), 70 Furillo RC (Vg-Ex), 84 Campanella RC (EX 60), 85a Mize NNOF (Ex+), 85b Mize NOF (Vg-Ex), 98a Rizzuto NNOF (NM 84), 98b Rizzuto NOF (Pr), 100 Hodges RC (EX/NM+ 82), 110 Wynn RC (NM 7), 111 Schoendienst (Ex-Mt), 162 Roe RC (Vg-Ex+, miscut), 175 Appling (NM 84), 194 Branca RC (Nr/Mt), 209 Keller (Ex-Mt), 210 Gordon (Nr/Mt), 214 Ashburn RC (EX 60), 224 Paige (VG/EX 50), 226 Snider RC (VG 40), 233 Doby (NM 84), and 238 Lemon RC (Ex). Grades of the balance of the cards: Low Numbers (124 cards): 32% Ex-Mt with some higher, 51% Ex, and 17% Vg to Vg-Ex with two lesser. High Numbers (86 cards): 24% Ex-Mt, 42% Ex, 22% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 12% lesser. Also included with the set are eight additional variations, each with "name on front": #4, 88, 85 Mize, 98 Rizzuto, 109, 126, 127, and 143. 1949 Bowman is the most underrated set in terms of rarity among Topps and Bowman sets issued between 1948 and 1955. Cards from this set are extremely hard to find in high grade in part because these cards often naturally have soft corners due to the quality of the paper stock on which they are printed. We rarely see 1949 Bowman sets, let alone in such clean and consistent condition. With some upgrades this is a group that could provide the foundation for a superb 1949 Bowman set. The equivalent SMR value for just thirteen of the seventeen SGC-graded cards (excluding the four cards grading less than EX, which include the key rookies of Paige, Snider, and Roberts, and not including the 231 ungraded cards!) is $4,180. Total: 248 cards (set of 240 plus 8 variations). Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $14,220.00
