1943-1949 Cuban Baseball-Card Collection (572 cards) Including Dihigo

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $2,666.25

Tremendous collection of 572 assorted Cuban baseball cards from the 1940s, including several near-complete sets and representing five different quality issues, highlighted by Hall of Famers Martin Dihigo, Ray Dandridge, and Ray Brown, as well as many Negro League stars and Major Leaguers. This lot originates from the collection of legendary collector Joe Pelaez and appeared in REA's 2012 Auction as lot 735. It has been consigned to this auction directly from the purchaser at that auction. 1) 1943 Ambrosia Amateur Cuban Baseball (173 cards): 105 cards mounted in the original album as intended. The album grades Fair and, without reference to the mounting, the cards range from Gd to Ex with a few exceptions (averaging Vg). An additional sixty-three cards (plus five duplicates for a total of sixty-eight) are also included. These cards range from Pr to Vg. 2) 1945-1946 Caramelo Deportivo (255 cards): Complete set of 100 minus only a single card (the virtually impossible #73 Reyes chase card) for completion. As intended, all the cards have been mounted in an album, a very common practice with these cards as the album was issued specifically for that purpose. The album is in overall Fair condition. Without reference to the mounting, the cards range in condition from Gd to Ex with a few exceptions (averaging Vg). Keys: #8 Marsans (Vg), 25 Dandridge RC (HOF, Vg), 27 Minoso RC (Gd), 30 Brown (HOF, Gd), 55 Luque (Ex), 65 Dihigo (HOF, Vg). A second album (Pr condition) with eighty-nine cards mounted inside is also included. Without reference to the mounting, the cards range in condition from Pr to Vg-Ex with a few exceptions (averaging Gd). Keys: #8 Marsans (Pr), 25 Dandridge RC (HOF, Pr), 27 Minoso RC (Gd), 30 Brown (HOF, Fr), 55 Luque (Gd), 65 Dihigo (HOF, Vg). An additional sixty-seven cards (fifty-five different) are also included. All but five cards have wear to the backs including some loss of lettering that is typical for these cards, and related to the fact that they were at one time mounted into albums as intended. Gd overall. 3) 1946-1947 Caramelo Deportivo (29 cards): #17, 20, 30, 34, 37, 38, two 40, 47 M.
