1933 R319 Goudey #106 Napoleon Lajoie

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $22,515.00

Superb crisp, clean example of this legendary rarity, graded "Authentic" by PSA. This 1933 Goudey #106 Lajoie was purchased by an extremely sophisticated collector many years ago, before professional grading existed. It was purchased as a MINT card. Unfortunately, PSA has graded this card simply "Authentic" because they have detected evidence of a slight trim. The card measures full size. The very subtle trimming (if PSA's assessment is accurate) is impossible to detect without a trained eye under professional-grading laboratory conditions. While it may never be assigned a numerical grade by PSA, this is still a tremendous card, and represents a potentially extraordinary value for the collector who wants a beautiful 1933 Goudey #106 Napoleon Lajoie at a far more affordable level than a graded example with a similar appearance. The card is crisp and clean, both front and back, with perfect centering, perfect registration, flawless bold colors, four strong, sharp corners, and perfect, bold printing on the reverse. We have carefully examined the card under black light and detect no recoloring or restoration whatsoever. It appears to us that the subtle trim detected by PSA may be across the top border, although it is so perfectly executed we cannot verify this with certainty. If this card had received a numerical grade, we would not have flagged it as a grading error. This card was previously offered as Lot #303 in REA's May 2006 sale, selling for $22,040. It has been consigned to this auction directly from the buyer at that sale. This is a unique collecting opportunity to acquire a 1933 Goudey Lajoie with a MINT appearance at a modest fraction of the SMR MINT 9 list price of $120,000. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $22,515.00
