1931 W517 #20 Babe Ruth - Rare Purple Background Variation

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $592.50

Rare purple background variation of Babe Ruth from the 1931 W517 set. Ruth is the only player in the 54-card set to be honored with two cards, and presented in this lot is card #20 depicting him in portrait form. This is one of Ruth’s most unusual cards, and is much appreciated by collectors for being so different in dimension and design from most other cards featuring Ruth's likeness. They are also from an unusual era, as W517 is one of the very few card sets issued after the popular strip cards of the 1920s but just before the bubble-gum cards of the early 1930s. The popular W517 large-style strip card (3 x 4 inches) issue was originally sold in vertical strips of three, which were intended to be hand-cut by youngsters. This example has been graded SGC POOR 10 due to writing and paper loss on the reverse, but the significance of this card lies in the purple tint, a rare color compared to the sepia and blue tints usually found in this issue. Variations in color are highly prized by collectors in a number of other prewar sets, making this variation of Babe Ruth a potentially extremely interesting addition to any W517 or Babe Ruth card collection. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $592.50
