1936 S&S "The National Game" Set in Original Box with all 52 Cards

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $533.25

While most collectors are familiar with the 1936 S&S playing cards, all fifty-two of which feature individual photographs of Major League players, few have ever seen the original game box and components. Offered here is rare near-complete example of "The National Game," issued by the S&S Games Company of Chicago, Illinois. The colorful graphics on the box lid picture an illustrated scene of a game in progress, with the title of the game boldly lettered along the top: "The National Game - A Base-Ball Card Game." The manufacturer's name and the price (50 cents) appear along the base. The interior components are comprised of the fifty-two different playing cards (plus one duplicate of Kennedy), a colorful wooden scoreboard (4.25 x 2.5 inches), a direction card for playing the game, a direction card for use of the scoreboard, a contest-entry certificate, and four of what we believe are ten original wooden pegs used in scoring. The cards display wear commensurate with their age and former use, including a few with minor abrasions and creases, and are in Very Good to Excellent condition overall. The box (5.25 x 4.25 x .75 inches) and the remainder of the interior components remain in Excellent condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $533.25
