1927 W560 Playing Cards Complete Set (64) Including Ruth and Gehrig

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,066.50

Complete set of sixty-four 1927 W560 Playing Cards. This near-set is in extremely high grade: 85% range from Ex to Nr/Mt and 15% Vg to Vg-Ex (with a couple slightly lesser). This set was issued on four uncut sheets (sold separately for a penny or two), each featuring sixteen cards, and were intended to be cut up by hand to create a playing-card deck, as offered here. Included in the set are forty-nine baseball players, highlighted by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig from his most legendary season as well as numerous other Hall of Famers. The remaining fifteen cards in the set feature subjects from other sports such as Jack Dempsey (boxing), Ken Strong (football), as well several famous nonsport personalities of the day (including Charles Lindbergh). A total of fourteen cards have been graded (eight PSA and six SGC). Keys: Bottomley (Ex-Mt), Cochrane (Gd), Cuyler (Ex-Mt), Foxx (SGC Authentic), Gehrig (SGC NM 84), Goslin (Vg), Grove (Ex), Haines (Ex), Hornsby (Nr/Mt), Hoyt (Ex-Mt), Johnson (SGC Authentic), Lindstrom (Nr/Mt), Pennock (Vg-Ex), Ruth (SGC Authentic), Simmons (Ex), Vance (Nr/Mt), L. Waner (Vg-Ex), and P. Waner (Ex-Mt). The other graded cards: SGC MINT 96: Delaney. PSA NM-MT 8: Heeney. SGC EX/NM 80: Gibson. PSA VG-EX 4: Kamm. PSA Authentic: Bell, Byrd, Dempsey, Farrell, Lindbergh, and Strong. W560 is a very substantial set. It also represents one of the very few sets issued in the late 1920s, and includes the first-issued cards of many players. W560 cards are beginning to be recognized for the outstanding value they represent compared with most other vintage cards. Total: 64 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,066.50
