1927 E210 York Caramels Type 2 PSA-Graded Near-Complete Set (54/60)

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $10,665.00

Addendum: In the printed catalog, the one card graded PSA EX-MT 6 is listed as #6. This is an error. The set contains #40 Willie Kamm graded PSA EX-MT 6.

Rarely offered near-complete set of 1927 E210 York Caramels (Type 2) cards. This near-complete set includes an incredible thirty Hall of Famers, highlighted by Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Ty Cobb. Included are fifty-four cards, missing only six for completion, all graded and encapsulated by PSA. This assembly currently ranks second on the PSA Set Registry All-Time Finest list with a 2.92 GPA and is the closest to completion ever entered on either the PSA or SGC Set Registries. York Caramel issued two sets in 1927 (Types 1 and 2), each similar in design with only minor differences in the image and player selection, as well as the orientation of the reverse. Type 2 cards, however, are significantly rarer than Type 1 cards, with fewer than two hundred examples graded by PSA in total. In fact, two cards missing from this set (#15 Mitchell and 32 Carey) do not yet have a single copy graded by PSA, making a complete PSA-graded set impossible at this time and further speaking to the difficulty and special nature of the collection offered here. PSA condition composite: EX-MT 6 (1 card): #40. EX+ 5.5 (2 cards): #41 Harris (HOF, highest graded) and 43. EX 5 (7 cards): #8 Pennock (HOF, highest graded), 33, 39, 44 Alexander (HOF, highest graded), 55, 56, and 58. VG-EX+ 4.5 (1 card): #29 Lazzeri (HOF). VG-EX 4 (9 cards): #5 Hartnett (HOF, highest graded), 11, 14 Traynor (HOF, highest graded), 18, 20 Kelly (HOF, highest graded), 23 Schalk (HOF, highest graded), 27 Cobb (HOF, highest graded), 45 P. Waner (HOF, highest graded), and 49 Goslin (HOF, highest graded). VG+ 3.5 (1 card): #4 Faber (HOF, highest graded). VG 3 (5 cards): #7, 9, 17, 34, and 36 Rice (HOF). GOOD+ 2.5 (1 card): #38. GOOD 2 (18 cards): #2 (MK), 3, 6 Ruth (HOF), 12, 16 Rixey (HOF), 19 Bancroft (HOF), 21 Combs (HOF), 25 Wilson (HOF), 26 Gehrig (HOF), 28 Speaker (HOF), 31, 37, 47, 51, 53 Roush (HOF), 54 Sisler (HOF), 57 Coveleski (HOF, highest graded), and 59 L. Waner (HOF). POOR 1 (9 cards): #10 Sewell (HOF), 13 Hornsby (HOF, highest graded), 22 Heilmann (HOF), 30 Hoyt (HOF, highest graded), 35, 42 McGraw (HOF), 48, 50 Frisch (HOF), and 52. Twenty-six cards in this near-set are the highest graded with an additional twenty-one having only one card graded higher. This is the largest group of cards from this issue that we have ever offered. The E210 York Caramel set is identical in design to several other issues of the era, such as Tharp's Ice Cream, Sweetman, and Harrington's Ice Cream, but with advertising for the "York Caramel Co." of York, Pennsylvania, on the reverse. Collectors have always appreciated the rarity and primitive charm of this distinctive candy issue. York Caramels appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. This is an extraordinary near-complete set of these distinctive and rare 1920s cards. Total: 54 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $5,000+++. SOLD FOR $10,665.00
