1878 H804-6 Forbes Co. Comic Baseball Trade Card Complete SGC-Graded Set (6)

Starting Bid - $100.00, Sold For - $948.00

Extremely attractive complete set of H804-6 trade cards issued by Forbes Co. of Boston. This set of six cards issued in 1878 is colorfully illustrated with drawings of various baseball scenes and a one or two word identifier at top. The set is of special significance as it is among the earliest of all baseball-related card sets. This group is particularly special as it is a matched advertisement set with each card bearing at the bottom a printed advertisement for James F. Cosgrove, & Co., a Connecticut-based shoe dealer. (These cards were produced by the Forbes Co. of Boston to be sold to merchants for their use as promotional advertising cards.) Each card has been graded by SGC and, as can easily be seen, presents much better than the assigned grade. Included are the following: VG 40: Foul and Judgement. GOOD 30: A Fly and Muff. FAIR 20: Home Run and Twist. The backs are blank and show some evidence of glue residue from mounting at one point in time, which accounts for the low technical grades. The cards otherwise have an Excellent appearance! This is a gorgeous complete set of these early baseball trade cards. Reserve $100. Estimate $300+. SOLD FOR $948.00
