1922 Zeenut PCL Jim Thorpe

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $6,517.50

Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Extremely attractive example of this rare and desirable 1922 Zeenut card featuring the legendary Jim Thorpe at the age of 35 playing for the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League. This is one of only a handful of cards of Jim Thorpe issued during his baseball-playing days. In fact, this is the only card featuring Thorpe playing in the PCL (not many people are even aware that Thorpe played in the PCL after his Major League career with the Giants). Thorpe appeared in just thirty-five games for Portland in 1922, but made a significant contribution by batting .308 with one home run, two triples, and three doubles. Despite the technically accurate modest grade, due entirely to a neatly written 'Don't Play' in ink on the reverse, this is an extremely attractive example of one of the most classic and sought-after of all Jim Thorpe cards. The card has a crisp image, light wear to the corners, and a faint wrinkle in the upper left corner. The blank reverse is clean except for the previously mentioned writing. Without this flaw, the card would grade Vg-Ex. This example, which is the highlight of a newly discovered original-owner PCL collection offered throughout this auction, is among the most impressive and attractive of the few Jim Thorpe Zeenuts we have seen over the years. This is a tremendous example of this extremely rare and important card and one that presents equally as well as a far more expensive, higher-grade example. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++.
