1921 E253 Oxford Confectionery Complete SGC-Graded Set (20 cards)

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $5,332.50

Presented is a complete set of twenty cards (of which fourteen are Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb) issued by Oxford Confectionery of Oxford, Pennsylvania, all graded and encapsulated by SGC (except two PSA). Oxford Confectionery issued this unusual set in 1921, at the same time its larger competitors were also issuing baseball cards with caramel treats. Pennsylvania was a very popular area for candy manufacturers in the early 1920s, but Oxford Confectionery was a much smaller manufacturer than other Pennsylvania candy companies that issued baseball cards, and this no doubt relates to the far greater rarity of E253 Oxfords compared to other early 1920s caramel cards. Collectors have always appreciated the rarity and primitive charm of this distinctive candy issue, which features photos that are unique to this set. Oxfords appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. This complete set has been assembled by an extremely dedicated collector over a period of several years, and represents a tremendous collecting achievement. SGC Condition Report: One VG/EX 50: Perkins. Six VG 40: Holke, Johnson (HOF), Pratt, Rousch (HOF), Speaker (HOF), and Witt. One GOOD+ 35: Sisler (HOF). Five GOOD 30: Bancroft (HOF, PSA GOOD 2), Collins (HOF), Grimes (HOF), Meadows, and Schalk (HOF). Four FAIR 20: Alexander (HOF), Cobb (HOF), Ruth (HOF), and Williams. Three POOR 10: Carey (HOF), Frisch (HOF, PSA PR-FR 1 [MK]), and Hornsby (HOF). This is an attractive set with strong presentation on almost every card and downgrades due to slight wear on the fragile stock. Due to the high concentration of key Hall of Famers and the inclusion of Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, this set naturally has a particularly strong "break value" if desired (though while it can always be broken up, its assembly is not so easy). An exceptional and rarely seen complete set of this distinctive and hard-to-find 1920s candy-card issue. Total: 20 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open).
