1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco Deasley

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,133.00

Extremely rare sample card from the Yum Yum Tobacco series of 1888 featuring an extraordinarily bold portrait photo of Washington catcher Pat Deasley in his final Major League season. Yum Yum Tobacco was a brand of the August Beck Company of Chicago. This is an incredible example of this significant nineteenth-century rarity. Advanced collectors have appreciated the mystique of the rarest pre-1900 baseball-card issues for decades. Whether it is because of the brand name, their unusual look, extreme rarity, or a combination of all of these factors, few card issues command the respect that Yum Yum Tobacco cards do among the most serious collectors. It is always a privilege to offer a Yum Yum. This is a particularly attractive example. As can be easily seen, it has an appearance that is far superior to its modest technical SGC grade. Graded POOR 10 by SGC due to back damage from album removal, this example has a magnificent Vg-Ex appearance from the front, with strong corners, excellent centering, and outstanding contrast and clarity. This is a gorgeous card! A light horizontal surface crease is present about Deasley's head and light remnants of scrapbook removal (as previously noted) appear on the otherwise clean blank-back reverse. This is an exceptionally attractive photographic-style example (Yum Yums were also issued with line-drawn "woodcut" designs) from this extremely rare and desirable nineteenth-century set. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
