1914 B18 Blankets Ty Cobb - Brown Infield Variation

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $592.50

Brown Infield variation of Ty Cobb from the B18 Blankets set. These 5.25-inch squares of “flannel baseball cards” were issued in 1914, with several popular brands of tobacco. They are referred to as “blankets” because they were intended to be sewn together to create bed covers, pillowcases, etc. The Cobb Brown Infield variation is one of the keys to the set, both because it features Ty Cobb and because it is far scarcer than the White Infield variation. (The third Cobb variation in the set - the Red Infield variation - is virtually impossible to find. Fewer than ten examples are known.) This crisp example of Ty Cobb's Brown Infield variation is well centered with just a minor horizontal fold visible on an otherwise boldly colored and clean front. The reverse is clean except for the remnants of the original sticker (often found on high-grade examples, relating to how these were packaged with tobacco) adjacent to one of the bases. Often overlooked by collectors, B18s are beginning to be recognized both for their scarcity, and for the exceptional value they represent compared to many other 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $592.50
