1914 B18 Blankets Collection (42)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,303.50

Collection of forty-two B18 blankets, a very crisp and clean group, including several stars and Hall of Famers, ranging in grade from Vg-Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex) with eleven receiving lesser grades due to staining or miscuts (B18s were often not cut perfectly by the factory). These 5.25-inch squares of “flannel baseball cards” were issued in 1914, with several popular brands of tobacco. They are referred to as “blankets” because they were intended to be sewn together to create bed covers, pillowcases, etc. Often overlooked by collectors, B18s are beginning to be recognized both for their scarcity, and for the exceptional value they represent compared to many other 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. The collection includes the following: (color refers to pennants, infield, or basepaths, per The Standard Catalog checklist): Bassler (yellow), Bauman (white), Boone (green), Chance (HOF, green), two Cole (blue and green), Coveleski (white), Cutshaw (green), Daubert (green), Doyle (green), Fletcher (green), Gainor (white), Gandil (green), Gowdy (white), Grant (green), Hartzell (green), Hummel (blue), Keating (green), two Maisel (blue and green), Maranville (HOF, white), McBride (green), J. Miller (purple), O. Miller (green), Moeller (green), Morgan (green), Moriarty (white), Murray (green), O'Neill (purple), Olson (yellow), two Peckinpaugh (blue and green), Perdue (white), Rucker (green), Snodgrass (green), Stengel (HOF, blue), Wagner (green), Wallace (HOF, purple), J. Walsh (green), Wheat (HOF, green), Whitted (purple), and Wiltse (green). An impressive group, including four Hall of Famers. Total: 42 blankets. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,303.50
