1914 WG4 Polo Grounds Complete Set (54 cards) Including Joe Jackson and PSA MINT 9 Cobb and Wagner!

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $7,110.00

Presented is a spectacular high-grade 54-card complete 1914 Polo Ground game-card set. This rare game-card set is referred to as “The Polo Grounds” game because the back of each card features a green-and-white photograph of a game in action at the Polo Grounds. The set was produced by The Card Baseball Co., Inc., of Norfolk, Virginia. They named the set "All Star Card Baseball" and the box that housed these cards promised that the game is "Exciting! Interesting! Thrilling!" and "The Hit of the Season!" When issued, the game included a total of fifty-four cards representing thirty different players plus twenty-four duplicates along with an instruction manual. Armed with the instructions, youngsters could use the cards to play an exciting game of indoor baseball. This set includes all fifty-four cards, including the multiples (as issued) of several key stars (four cards of Honus Wagner, two Ty Cobb, etc.). The fronts have a sepia player photo plus a baseball “play” to determine the result of the player’s action. Incredible complete set of this classic issue which includes all the great stars of the day, including Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and an additional eleven Hall of Famers. (Including duplicates, the complete 54-card deck as offered here features an incredible total of twenty-six Hall of Famers plus Joe Jackson, in addition to non-HOFer stars such as Joe Wood.) Eight cards have been graded and encapsulated by PSA. (Note: All are worthy of encapsulation.) Keys: Baker (Ex+), Chance (Nr/Mt), two Cobb (MINT 9 and NM-MT 8), three Collins (Nr/Mt-Mt and two Nr/Mt), Joe Jackson (EX-MT 6), Jennings (Nr/Mt-Mt), Lajoie (Nr/Mt-Mt+), Maranville (Nr/Mt-Mt), four Marquard (three Nr/Mt-Mt and Nr/Mt), two Mathewson (both NM-MT 8), McGraw (Nr/Mt), two Plank (Nr/Mt-Mt+ and Ex-Mt), two Speaker (Nr/Mt-Mt and Ex-Mt), three Wagner (MINT 9, NM-MT 8, and EX-MT 6), and two Walsh (Nr/Mt-Mt and Nr/Mt). The balance of the cards grade similarly and are almost all Nr/Mt or better with only six grading Ex-Mt and one lesser. These cards were obviously purchased in the year of issue and have not been played with; they have been carefully stored and preserved over the past 99 years. This is an outstanding high-grade set (and in fact is only the second uncirculated complete set we have ever offered), which would make an incredible addition to any prewar card or Hall of Fame collection. This set has a very substantial break value due to the high concentration of stars and Hall of Famers. The SMR value for just the eight PSA-graded cards (not including the 46 ungraded cards, which include an additional nineteen Hall of Famers!) is $5,775. Total: 54 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++.
