1914 Boston Garter Nap Lajoie

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,962.50

Graded "Authentic" by SGC. Extremely rare sample card of 1914 Boston Garter featuring Hall of Fame infielder Nap Lajoie from the Cleveland Naps of the American League. The checklist on the back lists ten cards to the set. Like the other two (full color) sets issued by Boston Garter, these cards were also issued one per box of twelve Boston-brand garters. Because they are slightly smaller (each measuring approximately 6.5 x 4 inches), and printed in green-and-white or sepia tones as opposed to full color, this 1914 Boston Garter issue has always received far less attention than the two Boston Garter color issues. They are, however, of a similar extreme rarity. This card has a crisp image with flawless contrast. Two creases, in the upper left corner and originating from the bottom border and ending just above Lajoie's back knee, are visible on front and back. The borders on all four sides have been trimmed down leaving only the important central image. The text of the reverse, like all other 1914 Boston Garters, appears to have a portion of the top missing. The unusual cut along the top of cards from this set appears to be related to their method of issue. The cards were not issued in vertical strips; they were apparently attached to the Boston Garters packaging and had to be removed. Most examples we have seen appear to have been cut with scissors at the top. This is a desirable example of a key Hall of Fame sample card from one of the rarest baseball-card sets of the era. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,962.50
