1909 T212 Obak Near-Complete SGC-Graded Set (69/76)

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $9,480.00

Near-complete set of 1909 T212 Obak cards, missing only seven cards for completion, and including "Black Sox" member Chick Gandil. Each card has been graded and encapsulated by SGC. Obaks are among the most popular of all early card issues featuring players from the Pacific Coast League. While catalogued simply as T212, Obaks were actually issued over a period of three years, from 1909 to 1911, and are really three sets. The 1909 Obak set featured players from the PCL teams. The 76-card 1909 set is the first of the three annual T212 baseball cards from Obak Cigarettes. The 1909 set cards are by far the rarest of the three Obak sets and are easily distinguished by the blue printing on their backs in an “Old English” font. Many 1909 Obaks were obviously hand-cut at the factory and were issued exactly in this manner; several cards are encapsulated as "Authentic" due to their very slight irregular cut but are definitely not trimmed. The complete SGC condition composite follows: EX/NM 80 (1 card): Browning. EX 60 (5 cards): Ehman, Fitzgerald, Graham, Haley, and Hitt. VG/EX 50 (10 cards): Baum, Beall, Brashear, Brown, Cameron, Eagan, Griffin, Harkins, Mott, and Tennant. VG 40 (8 cards): Carson, Hogan, Howard, C. Lewis, Murphy, Ornsdorff, Ort, and Willis. GOOD 30 (11 cards): Berry, Byrnes, W. Hogan, La Longe, D. Lewis, J. Lewis, McArdle, McKune, Melchoir, Stoval, and Willett. FAIR 20 (5 cards): Bodie, Garrett, Graney, Raymer, and Zeider. POOR 10 (11 cards): Breen, D. Brown, Delmas, Easterly, Flannagan, Gandil, Guyn, McCredie, Nelson, Whalen, and Wiggs. Authentic (18 cards): Bernard, Boyce, Brackenridge, Christian, Coy, Dillion, Henley, Howse, Mohler, Mundorff, Nagle, Olson, Ragan, Reidy, Ryan, Smith, Wheeler, and J. Williams. The following seven cards are missing for completion: Carroll, Fisher, Jansing, Martinke, Shinn, Speas, and R. Williams. 1909 T212 Obak cards are rarely offered as complete or near-complete sets, and are highly prized by both minor-league collectors and tobacco-card collectors. Total: 69 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $9,480.00
