1909-1911 T206 White Border Partial Set (426 of 524) Including 339 Sovereign Backs!

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $35,550.00

Partial set of T206 White Borders comprised of 426 of the 524 cards in the set (81% complete) of which a staggering 339 feature a Sovereign advertising reverse. Within the Sovereigns, forty cards are from the 460 series representing forty of the fifty-two confirmed subjects with this advertising back according to the checklists available at The condition breakdown is 6% Ex, 65% evenly distributed Vg to Vg-Ex, 20% Fr to Gd (mostly Good), and 9% lesser (including approximately fifteen trimmed or irregularly cut). This T206 collection is highlighted by fifty-eight Hall of Famers (out of seventy-six in the set), including Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Cy Young, two Nap Lajoies, and two Christy Mathewsons, as well as numerous other key cards. These cards were part of a very substantial, totally untouched collection of 1910-era tobacco cards consigned to this auction (all cards from this collection appear in several lots throughout the auction), which was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. This original-owner collection is extremely pleasing and could serve as an ideal foundation for the building of a very attractive low- to mid-grade complete set. Vintage cards in general, and T206s in particular, have a special charm in circulated condition, and also represent a tremendous value compared to higher-grade examples. A large group of T206, or a complete set, in the offered grade is a particularly hot commodity, always extremely desirable to collectors, offering the most classic 1910-era baseball-card set without requiring the hundreds of thousands (or millions!) of dollars that a higher-grade set would cost. Even in low- to mid-grade, a T206 set runs into real money, a function of there being so many cards in the set and so many highlights (HOFers, etc.), but is of interest to and within the reach of so many more collectors. When it comes time to sell, a T206 set in any grade can be sold as a unit, or easily be broken up, providing a "built-in insurance policy." T206s are never going out of style and it is always a privilege to offer a complete set or a very substantial start towards one. This particular collection may have special appeal to T206 back collectors, as the inclusion of 339 different Sovereign backs is extremely unusual and noteworthy. We have selected twenty-seven cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC.

The key cards (including fifty-eight Hall of Famers) grade as follows: Baker (Fr), Beckley (Vg-Ex), Bender/no trees (Vg), Bender/trees (EX 60), Bender/port. (VG/EX+ 55), Bresnahan/port. The 98 missing cards for completion include Wagner, Plank, Magie, and Doyle (the "big 4"), as well as the following key cards (the balance are all commons): Brown/port., Chance/bat, Chance/yellow, Cobb/bat on, Cobb/bat off, Cobb/green, Collins/Minn., Demmitt/St. Louis, Elberfeld/Wash., Evers/Chi., Johnson/port., Keeler/bat, Kleinow/Bost., Lajoie/bat, Lundgren/Chi., Mathewson/port., McGraw/no cap, O'Hara/St. Louis, Smith/Chic.& Bos., Tinker/bat off, Young/bare hand, Young/port., and the forty-eight rare Southern Leaguers. This is a very attractive mixed-grade partial set of the 1910 era's most classic tobacco-card issue, which has remained in the family of the original owner who actually collected these cards in 1910. It also represents a special opportunity to acquire an extraordinarily large collection of one of the unusual and popular Sovereign advertising backs within the T206 set. The equivalent SMR value for just the twenty-seven SGC-graded cards (not including the 399 ungraded cards) is $8,535. Total: 426 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000++. SOLD FOR $35,550.00
