1914 B18 Blankets Collection (37)

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $829.50

Collection of thirty-seven B18 blankets (twenty-five different), a very crisp and clean group, including Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Rabbit Maranville. The collection ranges in grade from Vg-Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex). The group is cleanly cut with very few exceptions (B18s were often not cut perfectly by the factory), and several blankets display remnants of the original factory paper wrapping (as issued). These 5.25-inch squares of “flannel baseball cards” were issued in 1914, with several popular brands of tobacco. They are referred to as “blankets” because they were intended to be sewn together to create bed covers, pillowcases, etc. Often overlooked by collectors, B18s are beginning to be recognized both for their scarcity, and for the exceptional value they represent compared to many other 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. The collection includes the following: (color refers to pennants, infield, or basepaths, per The Standard Catalog checklist): Agnew (purple), Ainsmith (green), Baker (white), Burns (white), Chapman (purple), Cobb (HOF, white), four Coveleski (white), Doyle (green), three Fletcher (green), Gainor (white), Gandil (green, we grade this one blanket slightly lesser condition; Good due being slightly faded), Grant (green), three Griffith (white), James (white), Maisel (green), Mann (white), Maranville (HOF, white), Mitchell (purple), Moeller (green), Moriarty (white), Olson (purple), three Shanks (green), two Steele (purple), two Sweeney (green), and two Viox (red). This is a substantial group, including two key Hall of Famers, of these attractive 1910-era collectibles. Total: 37 blankets. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $829.50
