Circa 1965 Topps "Real Wood Plaks" Display Box and Singles (97)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $948.00

Collection of ninety-seven singles (including thirty-seven different) from the unusual Topps "Real Wood Plaks" set. Produced by Topps around 1965, this set was a bold move by the company to issue a series of cards unlike any other manufactured before. The sixty-six "card" set was actually produced on real pieces of compressed wood, each measuring 1-7/8 by 2-1/2 by 1/8 inches, with designs featuring humorous twists on common expressions or proverbs. A comical illustration appeared alongside the text on each plak. The wooden plaks were issued in pairs along with a piece of gum inside five-cent wax packs. This collection of plaks is in overall Nr/Mt-Mt condition with bold printing, clean surfaces, and little to no splintering present. Also included is an empty wax-pack display box which bills the set as containing "Funny Sayings, Poems, Signs." The box has been beautifully preserved, maintaining all of its bold colors and displaying minimal shelf wear. The faint outline of a small strip of vintage tape, obviously used to keep the box closed at one point in time, is present but barely noticeable as it blends in with the wood-colored side panel. This is an extremely attractive group of plaks from this rarely encountered, and highly unusual, Topps nonsport issue. Total: 97 plaks and one display box. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
