1911 T205 Gold Border Irvin Wilhelm "Suffered" Variation SGC EX 60

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,962.50

Wilhelm is one of the particularly rare cards in the T205 Gold Border set. Few realize that there are actually two variations to this card, relating to the text on the reverse (the variations are checklisted in The Standard Catalog as 202a and 202b). Presented here is the rarer of the two variations, and one of the most difficult to find of all T205 Gold Borders. Interestingly, this card just happened to be in a large Brooklyn Dodgers collection consigned to this auction. The consignor, an old-time collector, had no idea this was a rarity. He purchased it in the 1980s not as a rare variation, but just as a T205 of Wilhelm for his Dodgers collection. Submitted for grading by REA. This variation has “Suffered” in the 18th line of the bio and has been graded EX 60 by SGC. The card is well-centered with bold color and a strong image. Minor chipping is present in some areas along the delicate gold border and near the corners. The corners show even wear and minor rounding and may be more accurately defined as VG/EX in our opinion. Still, this is an extremely strong example of this rarity and a worthy addition to any T205 Gold Border master set. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $2,962.50
