1938 R69 Gum, Inc. "Horrors of War" Original Artwork to Card #208 Plus PSA 8 of Issued Card

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $474.00

Original artwork to card #208 entitled "Insurgents Plant Their Banner at the Sea." The Gum, Inc., "Horrors of War" series is perhaps the most famous of all nonsport issues. The sensational and often gruesome artwork of the "Horrors of War" set created a tremendous stir when these cards were issued in 1938, literally putting Gum, Inc., on the map, and setting the stage for many successful years of future card production. It is a miracle that many of the original artworks to this set have survived. All of these artworks originate from the family of Charles Steinbacher, the art director for Gum, Inc., and have been scattered to the four corners of the collecting world during the two decades since their discovery. This artwork to card #208 documents the Nationalist Spanish forces reaching the Mediterranean Sea and staking claim to their position, one that would threaten the remainder of Loyalist Spain by compromising communications to Barcelona. Like all "Horrors of War" artworks, this small painting measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches, the exact same size as the issued card, and is executed in watercolor on artist's board. The artwork is in Excellent to Mint condition, with production-related glue stains on the blank reverse, and has been encapsulated by PSA. Also included as an accompaniment to this artwork is a PSA NM-MT 8 copy of the issued card #208. This is an outstanding and noteworthy unique pairing from one of the most famous sets of all time. Total: 2 items. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $474.00
