1936 R162 Overland Candy "Walt Disney Pictures" Collection (8)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,659.00

Presented are eight extremely rare examples from the R162 "Walt Disney Pictures" series. These cards, produced by the Overland Candy Company, feature colorful scenes from several early Disney cartoons and films. Originally thought to be a 1936 issue, we believe the set was more likely issued in 1939 based on the copyright markings and the fact that two of the films, The Ugly Duckling and Donald's Lucky Day, did not debut until early 1939. Regardless of the exact dating, this set has remained extremely elusive to collectors throughout the years. According to Christopher Benjamin, in his definitive work The Sport Americana Price Guide to the Non-Sports Cards 1930-1960, twenty-five examples are found within the illustrious collection of legendary collector Jefferson Burdick, now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Outside of that, at the time of publication in 1993, Benjamin stated that not another single example was yet known. This has changed in the past twenty years, but not by much. We are aware of only one example ever offered at public auction, in 2008 at Mastro Auctions, where it reportedly realized more than $2,200 (which may be an anomaly; there are, of course, no other auction results with which to compare), as well as nineteen other examples in private hands. The eight cards presented here represent (to the best of our knowledge) the largest group to ever be available for sale or auction. The offered cards, which measure 5 x 7 inches, have been beautifully preserved throughout the years, displaying bright, crisp artwork, strong corners, and remaining entirely free of any creases or wrinkles. The blank reverse of each card is completely clean. The group presents in overall Ex to Ex-Mt condition. This collection consists of the following: Brave Little Taylor: "My Hero!" featuring Mickey and Minnie. Donald's Lucky Day: "Hey, You, Scat!" featuring Donald Duck. Farmyard Symphony: "What a Break!". Shanghaied: "Now, I've Got Yuh!" featuring Mickey and Minnie. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: "Let Go My Pants!" and "To the Rescue." Ugly Duckling: "The Family Outing" and "Who Are You, Anyway?" Four of the cards in this group represent the only example of each that we know to exist outside of Burdick's collection. This group is also particularly special as the scenes depicted feature some of Disney's most recognizable and famous characters and films. This is a tremendous collection of these rare nonsport cards featuring some of the most prized and highly collectible subjects in all of nonsport collecting. Total: 8 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,659.00
