1911 T205 Gold Border Near-Complete Master Set (205/221) Including Rare Wilhelm "Suffered" Cycle Back Variation

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $8,295.00

The T205 Gold Borders set is universally recognized as one of the most classic of all tobacco-card issues and includes all the great stars of the era and many rarities. Presented is a near-complete master set of 202 cards plus three variations for a total of 205 cards. This set is missing six cards for a complete basic set (Bresnahan/mouth open, Chase/only left ear, Grant, Joss, K. White, and Young) and ten variations for a complete master set (Chase/extends, Dougherty/red sock, Gray/stats, Hoblitzell/correct no "Cin.," Hoblitzell/no stats, Leifeild/A.P., Mathewson/1 loss, Moran/stray line, Wallace/no cap 1 line, and Wilhelm/"suffe ed"). A total of thirty-three cards have been professionally graded (all PSA except for three SGC, one BVG, and one GAI). The bulk of this set was purchased by our consignor at auction in 2000 with approximately thirty additions made over the years in an attempt to reach completion. The cards span all grades (including many trimmed), but all present with excellent eye-appeal across the board, with even the lesser-graded cards exhibiting bright colors and crisp focus. Keys: Baker (trimmed, otherwise Vg), Barger/part "B" (PR 1 [MC]), Bender (trimmed, otherwise Vg), Bresnahan/mouth closed (Fr), Brown (Pr), Chance (trimmed, otherwise Gd, Cycle back), Chase/frame ends (GOOD 2 [MK]), Cicotte/"Black Sox" (VG-EX 4), Clarke (trimmed, otherwise Vg), Cobb (trimmed, otherwise Pr/Fr), Collins/mouth closed (GAI VG+ 3.5), Collins/mouth open (VG 3), Crandall/"t" not crossed (slight trim, otherwise Vg), Crandall/"t" crossed (VG-EX 4, Cycle back), Dahlen (FR 1.5), Donohue (trimmed, otherwise Pr), Doughtery/white sock (VG 3), Duffy (trimmed, otherwise Vg), Evers (SGC VG/EX 50), Fisher (Pr), Ford/white (PR 1), Graham/Cubs (trimmed, otherwise Vg), Gray/no stats on back (slight trim, otherwise Fr), Griffith (EX 5), Harmon/left ear (Pr, Cycle back), Hoblitzell/"Cin." after 1908 stat (BVG VG 3), Hoblitzell/name incorrect (slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), Huggins (trimmed, otherwise Fr, Cycle back), Jennings (GOOD+ 2.5), Johnson (VG 3), Karger (trimmed, otherwise Fr), Kleinow (slight trim, otherwise Vg), Latham/W. A. Latham on back (PR 1), Leifield/"A" on front (Fr), Marquard (slight trim, otherwise Fr), Mathewson (slight trim, otherwise Gd), McGraw (Vg-Ex), Raymond (GOOD 2 [MK]), Rowan (FR 1.5), Scanlan (trimmed, otherwise Pr), Shean/Cubs (VG 3), Speaker (trimmed, otherwise Pr), Suggs (VG-EX 4), Sweeney (trimmed, otherwise Fr), Tinker (trimmed, otherwise Fr), Turner (slight trim, otherwise Vg+), Vaughan (trimmed, otherwise Pr), Wagner (VG-EX 4), Wallace/with cap (Vg), Wallace/no cap - two lines of 1910 stats (Pr), Walsh (trimmed, otherwise Fr), Wheat (Vg, Broad Leaf back), Wilhelm/"suffered" in bio (slight trim, otherwise Gd, Cycle back), and Wiltse/right ear (trimmed, otherwise Pr). Minor Leaguers: Adkins (Vg), Batch (GOOD 2), Cady (slight trim, otherwise Vg), J. Collins (VG-EX 4), Dunn (Fr), Frick (trimmed, otherwise Fr), Hanford (Vg), Lee (Fr), McAllister (Pr), Merritt (slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), Nee (slight trim, otherwise Fr/Gd), and Phelan (Pr/Fr). Other graded cards: Three VG-EX 4: Doyle, Stone (MK), and Steinfeldt. One VG+ 3.5: Moran/no stray line. Two VG 3: Latham/A. Latham on back and H. Lord (MK). Two GOOD 2: Milan and Overall (SGC GOOD 30). One FAIR 1.5: Jacklitsch (SGC FAIR 20). One PR-FR 1: Kling. One Authentic: Lobert. The balance of the cards grade 24% Vg to Vg-Ex, 22% Pr to Gd, and 54% trimmed. The trimmed cards present well, with 58% appearing otherwise Vg to Ex and 42% Pr to Gd. Most of the backs are Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, Hassan, or Honest Long Cut, but also included are Broad Leaf (one), Sovereign (six), Polar Bear (twenty-two), American Beauty (one), and Cycle (ten). This is a great near-complete set including almost all of the many Hall of Famers, minor leaguers, and many rarities that make the T205 Gold Borders set so challenging to complete. The total SMR value for just twenty-seven of the graded cards (not including the five qualified cards, one Authentic, or the 172 ungraded cards) is $4,030. Total: 205 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $8,295.00
