Circa 1888 Duke Tobacco Premium Album Collection (7)

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $829.50

Collection of seven rare circa 1888 tobacco-premium albums, all issued by W. Duke, Sons & Co. In the 1880s, in addition to insert cards, tobacco companies also offered special albums available only by mail in exchange for coupons (usually 75 or 100) which were packed with tobacco, one coupon per pack. Each premium album features images of all of the subjects (usually fifty different) featured in a given set, along with additional background artwork. These souvenir albums were the top prizes offered by the tobacco companies, and have long been highly prized by collectors. These albums feature a diverse range of topics, including birds, fish, famous editors, etc. Many collectors are familiar with the few albums featuring baseball players as they are very popular and expensive. The nonsport albums are just as scarce, yet far more reasonable in price. This collection includes the following albums: 1) A26 Costumes of All Nations (10-3/8 x 6-3/4 inches). One interior page is missing a small piece, another interior page has a large spot of paper loss on the back, and the last interior page has the number "6694" written in pencil on back, otherwise the album grades Ex. 2) A27 Governors, Coats of Arms, Etc. of the States and Territories (10-1/4 x 6-3/4 inches). Gd due to paper loss on front cover. 3) A28 Heroes of the Civil War (10-3/8 x 6-3/4 inches). Technically in Fr condition due to missing pieces on the back cover, but with a much better appearance. A very presentable example of this rare and extremely popular tobacco-premium album. 4) A30 Rulers, Flags, Coats of Arms of All Nations (10-3/8 x 6-3/4 inches). Technically Pr condition due to two tears, missing corner, and a sticker on back cover. 5) A31 Shadows (10-3/8 x 6-7/8 inches). Fr condition. 6) A33 The Terrors of America (10-1/2 x 6-7/8 inches). Technically in Fr condition due to a piece of clear tape on the back cover, but otherwise Vg-Ex. 7) A34 Yacht Colors of the World (10-3/8 x 6-7/8 inches). Fr condition. As is often the case with these albums, most have some cover flaws, which is responsible for the modest, but technically accurate, grades. In many cases the interior pages are much better than suggested by the overall grade assigned to each album. This is an extremely attractive and substantial group of nonsport tobacco-premium albums, all issued by Duke Tobacco. Total: 7 albums. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $829.50
