1911 T205 Gold Border Collection Including Cobb, Johnson, and Young (147 Different)

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $8,295.00

Collection of 147 different (out of the 208 cards in the complete set) 1911 T205 Gold Borders, including nineteen Hall of Famers, highlighted by Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, and Cy Young. These cards were part of a very substantial, totally untouched collection of 1910-era tobacco cards consigned to this auction (all cards from this collection appear in several lots throughout the auction), which was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. Each card has either the Sovereign (118) or Honest Long Cut (29) tobacco advertisement on the reverse. Sovereign is a scarce back, certainly not in the same league as Drum or Hindu, but very unusual and seen far less often than standard advertising backs (Hassan, Piedmont, Sweet Caporal). To find 118 different cards, all with Sovereign backs, together in one group is very unusual! We have selected six cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). Condition: Twenty cards grade Ex, sixty-eight cards grade Vg to Vg-Ex, and the balance of fifty-nine cards are lower grade, ranging from Poor to Good. Highlights: Baker (Fr, Honest Long Cut back), Bender (Pr/Fr, Honest Long Cut back), Bresnahan/mouth closed (Pr, Honest Long Cut back), Brown (Vg), Chance (Gd/Vg), Chase/gold frame extends (Vg), Cicotte ("Black Sox" member, Vg), Clarke (Pr), Cobb (SGC GOOD 30, Honest Long Cut back), Crandall/"T" crossed (Gd), Dougherty/white sock (Ex), Duffy (SGC EX 60), Evers (Pr), Gray/stats on back (Pr/Fr), Griffith (Gd), Hoblitzell/"Cin." after 1908 stat (Fr), Huggins (Vg), Jennings (SGC EX 60), Johnson (SGC EX 60), Leifield/"A. P." on front (Vg-Ex), Marquard (SGC VG/EX+ 55), McGraw (Vg), Tinker (Gd), Wallace/cap (Gd/Vg, Honest Long Cut back), Wheat (Vg), and Young (SGC EX 60). Today these collections of modest-grade classic cards, especially when offered with key stars such as Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, and Cy Young, as is the case here, represent some of the best values in all of vintage-card collecting. This collection of T205 Gold Borders, with 147 different cards representing 71% of a complete set, could easily serve as a solid foundation for the building of an exceptionally attractive low- to mid-grade set. The equivalent SMR value for the just the six SGC-graded cards (not including the 141 ungraded cards) is $4,225. Total: 147 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000++. SOLD FOR $8,295.00
