Circa 1888 Tobacco Premium Album Collection (5) Plus Complete Set of N181 Cards

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $474.00

Collection of five rare circa 1888 tobacco premium albums. In the 1880s, in addition to insert cards, tobacco companies also offered special albums available only by mail in exchange for coupons (usually 75 or 100) which were packed with tobacco one coupon per pack. Each premium album features images of all of the subjects (usually 50 different) in a given set, along with additional background artwork. These souvenir albums were the top prizes offered by the tobacco companies, and have long been highly valued by collectors. These albums presented a diverse range of topics, including fish, famous editors, etc. Many collectors are familiar with the few albums featuring baseball players as they are very popular and expensive. The nonsport albums are just as scarce, yet far more reasonable in price. This collection consists of the following albums: Allen & Ginter: 1) A9 Game Birds (8-1/2 x 6 inches). One corner missing on back cover, otherwise Vg-Ex. 2) A25 World's Inventors (9-1/4 x 6 inches). Front cover has several pieces missing and has been detached from the original string binding. The back cover has two pieces missing. Pr condition. W. Duke Sons & Co.: 3) A31 Shadows (10-3/8 x 6-7/8 inches). Gd due to paper loss on front cover. 4) A33 The Terrors of America (10-1/2 x 6-7/8 inches). Technically in Fr condition due to a tear on the back cover, but with a much better appearance. W. S. Kimball: 5) A40 Arms of Dominions (5-3/4 x 7-3/4 inches). Blue and gold cover variety. Fr condition. The interior pages of the album are designed with slots to hold a complete set of forty-eight N181 cards (which are included and housed in the album as intended). As is often the case with these albums, most have some cover wear and this is the cause for much of the downgrading. In many cases the interior pages are much better than suggested by the overall grade assigned each album. This is a very attractive group of nonsport tobacco premium albums (plus accompanying 48-card set of N181 Kimball). Total: 5 albums plus a complete set of 48 cards. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $474.00
