1888 N78 Duke "Histories of Generals" Complete Set (50)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,896.00

Extremely attractive complete set of fifty 1888 N78 Duke "Histories of Generals" booklets. Sixteen are graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). Issued with Duke's Cigarettes, each booklet in the "Histories of Generals" set is the size of an insert card (2.75 x 1.5 inches) and features a portrait image of a U.S. General on the front with a biography presented on the interior pages. The back cover of each features a beautiful colorful lithograph of a battle scene or soldier-in-action image. This is an exceptionally strong set of these very unusual sixteen-page booklets with colorful covers, issued as tobacco premiums, with condition ranging from Vg to Ex with a few slightly lesser. Thirty-four of the booklets have excess paper affixed to the inside back cover (not noticeable when viewed as a closed booklet) and would technically grade modestly despite presenting at a far superior level. Each booklet maintains its vibrant colors, is fully intact, and is uncreased and wrinkle-free, with four exceptions. This set was carefully assembled by a discerning collector over a period of many years with a focus on outstanding eye-appeal. SGC grading composite: One EX 60: Early. One VG/EX+ 55: Magruder. One VG+ 45: Morgan. Eleven VG 40: Forrest, Jackson, Logan, Pemberton, Pickett, Porter, Rosecrans, Semmes, Sheridan, Sherman, and Stuart. One GOOD 30: Lyon. One FAIR 20: Lee. This is by far the finest set of these booklets that we have ever seen or handled despite the few inconsequential technical flaws. Duke's "Histories of Generals" are rarely offered as a complete set, and are highly prized by Civil War collectors, miniature book collectors, and nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco-card collectors. Total: 50 booklets. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,896.00
