Circa 1888 Allen & Ginter Tobacco Premium Album Collection (19)
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,666.25
Outstanding collection of nineteen rare circa 1888 tobacco premium albums, all issued by Allen & Ginter. This collection represents a near-complete run, missing only six albums for a complete set of A&G tobacco-premium albums. In the 1880s, in addition to insert cards, tobacco companies also offered special albums available only by mail in exchange for coupons (usually 75 or 100) which were packed with tobacco, one coupon per pack. Each premium album features images of all of the subjects (usually 50 different) featured in a given set, along with additional background artwork. These souvenir albums were the top prizes offered by the tobacco companies, and have long been highly valued by collectors. These albums feature a diverse range of topics, including birds, fish, famous editors, etc. Many collectors are familiar with the few albums featuring baseball players as they are very popular and expensive. The nonsport albums are just as scarce, yet far more reasonable in price. This substantial collection consists of the following albums (all have their original binding string): 1) A1 American Editors, 1st Series (6 x 9 inches). A few minor creases on front cover. The back cover has a couple spots of paper loss, a few minor creases, and the price "$20.00" written in pencil. Technically Fr condition. 2) A4 Birds of the Tropics (9 x 6 inches). Fr-Gd. 3) A5 City Flags (8.5 x 7.5 inches). Fr condition due to writing on the front cover. 4) A7 Fish from American Waters (9.25 x 6 inches). Fr condition due to paper loss on both covers. 5) A8 Flags of All Nations (6 x 8.25 inches). The covers are intact but the inside pages have separated from the spine. Pr condition. 6) A9 Game Birds (8.5 x 6 inches). Gd-Vg. 7) A10 General Government and State Capitol Buildings (9.25 x 6 inches). Pencil writing and sticker on back cover, otherwise Vg-Ex. 8) A11 Quadrupeds (9.25 x 6 inches). Vg/Vg-Ex. 9) A12 Racing Colors of the World (jockeys; 8.25 x 6.25 inches) including the original mailing envelope. Gd. 10) A13 Song Birds of the World (9 x 6 inches). Vg-Ex/Ex. 11) A14 World's Beauties, 1st Series (6 x 7-3/4 inches). Gd. 12) A15 World's Beauties, 2nd Series (6 x 8 inches). Ex. 13) A18 World's Racers (horses; 6 x 8 inches). Gd. 14) A20 George Washington (6 x 9-1/4 inches). Vg. 15) A21 Napoleon (9-1/4 x 6 inches). Tiny spot of paper loss on front cover, otherwise Vg/Vg-Ex. 16) A22 Our Navy (9-1/8 x 5-7/8 inches). Fr. 17) A23 Paris Exhibition 1889 (6 x 9-1/4 inches). Pencil writing on back cover, otherwise Vg. 18) A24 With the Poets in Smokeland (6 x 9-1/4 inches). Gd. 19) A25 World's Inventors (9-1/4 x 6 inches). Gd. As is often the case with these albums, most have some cover flaws and this is the cause for much of the downgrading. In most cases the interior pages are much better than suggested by the overall grade assigned each album. This is an extremely impressive and substantial group of nonsport tobacco premium albums, including many very scarce titles. Total: 19 albums. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,666.25
