1763 Edmond Hoyle Signed Mr. Hoyle's Games in Presentation Case

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $592.50

"According to Hoyle..." For nearly three hundred years the very utterance of that phrase meant that a swift settlement to any disagreement regarding the rules for cards was shortly at hand. Edmond Hoyle's (1672-1769) status as the ultimate arbiter in the field of cards and games was the result of a series of popular books written by him in the early to mid 1700s. Offered here is the thirteenth edition of one of Hoyle's classic works, the complete formal title of which is Mr. Hoyle's Games of Whist, Quadrill, Piquet, Chess and Back-Gammon, Complete: in Which Are Contained, the Method of Playing and Betting, at Those Games, Upon Equal, Or Advantageous Terms, Including the Laws of the Several Games. Published by Thomas Osborne, London. Although no date is listed, it is generally regarded that the thirteenth edition (so marked on the title page) was printed in 1763. This book can be definitively categorized as an authorized copy because it bears the actual signatures of both "Edmond Hoyle" and "Tho. Osborne" written in black ink (grading "9/10") at the base of the title page. Hoyle's works were so popular at the time that they were often pirated soon after their printing. To combat that problem, and so that patrons could be assured that they were purchasing the authorized copy, Hoyle and his publisher came up with the solution of signing each book. That precaution is duly noted in print on the verso of the title page: "This Book having been entred [sic] at Stationers-Hall, according to Act of Parliament, whoever shall presume to Print or Vend a Pirated Edition, shall be prosecuted according to Law. The Proprietor has already obtained an Injunction against Nine Persons, for pirating or selling pirated Editions. No Copies of this Book are genuine, but what are signed by Edmond Hoyle, and Thomas Osborne." The 216-page book is missing its original boards, but it has been professionally rebound in green leather, with the title Mr. Hoyle's Games printed on the spine in gilt lettering. The pages display light foxing throughout; otherwise in Excellent condition overall. Housed in a custom-made green cloth solander case for optimal storage. Full LOA from PSA/DNA and LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $592.50
