1970 Grateful Dead Concert Poster - Promoted By Hells Angels
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,370.00
Original concert poster heralding a performance by the Grateful Dead at the Anderson Theater in New York City on November 23, 1970. What makes this poster all the more noteworthy is that the concert was promoted by the Hells Angels and was actually a benefit concert for the legendary motorcycle gang. The poster features an illustration of a skeleton riding a motorcycle through a graveyard, with the lettering reading "Hells Angels/Awakening/For The Living/with/The/Grateful Dead." A "Hells Angels New York City" chapter logo appears in the lower right corner. This is a rare poster, as it had a very low production number and was limited to distribution only in the New York City area. According to reports, a fight broke out prior to the concert between the Hells Angels and a rival biker gang, but it ended quickly and the concert then proceeded without delay. The poster (23 x 35 inches) displays a few tears in the upper and lower right corners, all of which have been repaired on the reverse with clear tape. A few heavy creases are also evident in the lower right corner, as are a few lighter ones in the main body of the poster. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. The poster has been rolled for many years and will ship in a tube. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $2,370.00
