Circa 1918 Franklin Delano Roosevelt Signed Photo

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $592.50

Photograph of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, taken during World War I while he was Assistant Secretary of the Navy, signed by Roosevelt in black fountain pen (grading "9") directly below his image. A vintage ink notation on the reverse reads: "Taken at captured German gun base near Busy-le-see in the Meaux sector near Paris during WWI - J. H. Roys (3rd from left) serving on Admiral Sims staff - FDR Asst Secty of Navy." The name "Commander John H. Roys" is also written in pencil on the reverse. Research indicates that a John H. Roys graduated from the Naval Academy in 1892. Based upon the notations on the reverse, this photo obviously once belonged to him and was signed by Roosevelt as a token of friendship and their shared military service. The photo, which is a second-generation print as evidenced by the earlier military stamp in the lower left corner, appears to be neatly trimmed along all four borders. A few slight surface wrinkles are evident throughout, as is a tiny edge tear along the left margin. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $592.50
