Signed Limited-Edition Stan Kotzen Sports Immortals Lithograph - 54 Signatures!
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $592.50
Colorful limited-edition lithograph, created by artist Stan Kotzen, signed by fifty-four of the sixty-one sports immortals pictured. While baseball, football, and basketball players represent the majority here, the artwork also features athletes from the world of hockey, tennis, and horse racing. Each of the respective athletes has signed the piece in pencil along the white border areas, with all of the signatures grading "9" or "10." The piece has also been signed and hand numbered ("42/1,000") by the artist in the lower right corner. This limited-edition art poster was commissioned for the 7th Annual Don Drysdale Hall of Fame Invitational Golf Tournament in 1993 and features all sixty-one Hall of Famers who participated in that year's charity tournament. The posters were not issued signed by the Hall of Famers. The limitation number of 1,000 refers only to the lithograph itself. Very few have been signed by even a few of the Hall of Famers (if any), let alone fifty-four of the sixty-one legends featured. The fifty-four signatures represented here, broken down by their respective sport, are as follows: Football (19): Jim Taylor, Paul Warfield, Otto Graham, Gale Sayers, Jack Ham, George Blanda, Deacon Jones, Mike Ditka, Hugh McElhenny, Marion Motley, Tom Fears, Ray Nitschke, Chuck Bednarik, Don Maynard, Lem Barney, Johnny Lujack, Ron Mix, Jan Stenerud, and Glenn Davis. Baseball (11): Don Drysdale, Al Kaline, Jim Palmer, Yogi Berra, Willie Mays, Brooks Robinson, George Kell, Pee Wee Reese, Rollie Fingers, Robin Roberts, and Ralph Kiner. Basketball (14): Bob Pettit, Julius Erving, Tom Gola, Ed McCauley, George Yardley, Ann Myers, Bill Sharman, John Havlicek, Dolph Schayes, Cliff Hagan, Sam Jones, Bob Kurland, Ralph Miller, and Harry Litwack. Hockey (6): Andy Bathgate, Dave Keon, Frank Mahovlich, Stan Mikita, "Boom Boom" Geoffrion, and Leonard Kelly. Tennis (3): Dennis Ralston, Alex Olmed, and Poncho Gonzalez. Horse Racing (1): Dell Miller. Included among the seven athletes pictured who have not signed the piece are Whitey Ford, Duke Snider, Juan Marichal, and Joe Morgan. The lithograph (31 x 23.5 inches) displays minor edge wear, including a few tiny tears and creases, and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+.
