Walter Hagen Signed Photo (Walter Hagen Estate Provenance!)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $711.00

Original portrait photo signed by legendary golfer Walter Hagen (1892-1969). The photo, which captures Hagen in profile, has been signed in black fountain pen (grading "6") in the lower left. Hagen was one of the most important figures in the early history of professional golf, helping to both popularize the sport and raise the status of professionals on the links. In 1922 he became the first American-born golfer to win the British Open (which he won three more times during the decade) and his eleven majors victories rank third behind only Jack Nicklaus (18) and Tiger Woods (14). In total, Hagen won two U.S. Opens (1914 and 1919), four British Opens (1922, 1924, 1928-29), five PGA Championships (1921, 1924-27) and five Western Opens. He was also a six-time Ryder Cup captain. In 1974 he became one of the first eleven inductees into the World Golf Hall of Fame. The photo (7.5 x 9.25 inches) is in apparent Near Mint condition and has been matted and framed to total dimensions of 13.25 x 15.25 inches. This photo originates directly from Walter Hagen's estate and is accompanied by a letter of provenance from Shelby J. Plyer, a close friend of Hagen who inherited many of his possessions. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $711.00
