1911 T9 Turkey Red Boxing Cabinet-Card Collection (11) Including Jack Johnson

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,185.00

Eleven different cards from the classic T9 Turkey Red boxing series, highlighted by Jack Johnson, Jim Jeffries, Stanley Ketchel, and Abe Attell (the middleman between the gamblers and players involved in the "fix" of the 1919 World Series). These cards were part of a very substantial, totally untouched collection of 1910-era tobacco cards consigned to this auction (all cards from this collection appear in several lots throughout the auction), which was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. Issued in conjunction with the T3 Turkey Red baseball series, the T9 boxing set features twenty-six champion boxers of the day, and is widely considered the most attractive and most desirable of all boxing issues. All the cabinets have checklists backs. This group consists of the following: #52 Attell, 54 Coulon, 55 Jim Jeffries (Gd/Vg), 56 Sullivan, 58 McFarland, 60 Moran, 62 Gardner, 66 Brown, 67 Stanley Ketchel (Vg), 69 Cross, and 76 Jack Johnson (top left corner missing, otherwise Vg). Very strong looking group for these condition-sensitive large cards, virtually crease-free (just a few with small light creases), with clean backs, no tack holes, remarkably consistent in grade, ranging from Gd/Vg to Vg condition (a few very slightly lesser, Gd). Total: 11 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,185.00
