1923 Louisville Colonels Team Photograph Including Hall of Famers Earl Combs and Joe McCarthy

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $474.00

Rare large-format team photograph of the 1923 Louisville Colonels, members of the class AA American Association. Nineteen team members are pictured in a classic team pose, including two future Hall of Famers: manager Joe McCarthy (seated; second from the left) and outfielder Earl Combs (standing in the middle row; second from the left). Ironically, both men would be reunited on the Yankees in 1931 when McCarthy took over the reins of the legendary "Bronx Bombers." Combs, who was nicknamed "The Kentucky Colonel," batted .380 for Louisville in 1923, which was his last season with the Colonels before his contract was purchased by the Yankees. McCarthy, who never played a day in the Major Leagues, was forced to toil a few more years in Louisville before the Cubs finally gave him his big managerial break in 1926. The year "1923" appears along the base in white lettering, while a credit stamp reading "Baker Art Gallery" is located in the lower right corner. The high quality and large size suggest that these photos may very well have been produced as keepsakes for team members. The photo (20 x 12 inches), which offers exceptional clarity, displays a two-inch horizontal tear along the right border and a minor two-inch vertical crease at the top (neither flaw affects any player images). The photo has been neatly mounted (probably by means of adhesive) to a large white cardboard backing (25 x 17 inches) that has effectively ameliorated the aforementioned condition anomalies. While technically in Very Good condition, nearly all of the minor flaws are relegated to the border areas and when matted and/or framed, the panoramic photograph will display as Excellent. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $474.00
