1914 Pittsburgh Pirates Broadside

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $474.00

Large broadside heralding a postseason game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and an unidentified ball club from Greensville, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday, October 13, 1914. The attractive broadside pictures both an interior and exterior view of Forbes Field, along with portrait images of the following nine Pirates players: Max Carey, Jim Voix, Wilbur Cooper, George McQuillan, Joe Kelly, Alex McCarthy, Bob Coleman, Joe Conzelman, and Ham Hyatt. While no year is listed on the piece, based upon the uniform style shown (two-year style only worn by the Pirates in 1913 and 1914) and the combination of players pictured, it can be conclusively dated to 1914. Obviously, the Pirates, like many teams from that era, were not adverse to playing postseason exhibition games to help generate some extra revenue for both the team and players. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find any information regarding this particular contest, but just the fact that the expense was taken to produce this large broadside probably indicates that it was well received by the local fans. We have never seen this piece and it may be unique, as we cannot imagine many others survived. The broadside (20 x 27.5 inches) displays one vertical and two horizontal folds, as well as a number of light creases, small tears, and tiny areas of light discoloration. In Very Good condition overall. The piece has been matted together with cut signatures of Max Carey (blue ink, "10") and Wilbur Cooper (blue ink, "10") to total dimensions of 26 x 36 inches. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $474.00
