Ron Lewis Original Mantle/Mattingly Artwork Used to Produce the Renata-Galasso First-Day Cover

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $711.00

Original Ron Lewis artwork, picturing Mickey Mantle and Don Mattingly together on the field. This is the actual original painting that was used to produce the Mattingly/Mantle first-day cover issued by Renata Galasso in 1985. Signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner: "Ron Lewis 85." The first-day cover was issued in commemoration of Don Mattingly becoming the first New York Yankees player to win a batting title since Mantle accomplished the feat in 1956. This rare and highly desirable Ron Lewis artwork has been in the possession of the publisher since the time of its commission. It has never before been offered for sale. Ron Lewis is one of the premier sports artists of our time. In addition to his baseball pieces, Lewis has also created many other iconic works relating to football, basketball, and boxing. Original Ron Lewis paintings are highly prized by collectors in both the fields of sports and art. The fact that this piece features two legendary New York Yankee players and has never before been available to collectors only adds to its appeal. The painting (8 x 10 inches), rendered in what appears to be watercolor on board, is in Mint condition. Together with a Renata Galasso first-day cover featuring this artwork, postmarked September 30, 1984, which was the date of the Yankees' final game of the season in which Mattingly won the batting title. Reserve $200. Estimate (open).
