1956 New York Yankees Scorecard - Scored for the Game in Which Mickey Mantle's Home Run Almost Cleared the Facade at Yankee Stadium!
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $711.00
On May 30, 1956, in the midst of what would be his finest overall season, Mickey Mantle made history by launching what would be one of the most memorable home runs ever hit at Yankee Stadium. Its historical implications had nothing to do with the significance of the game, a regular-season affair against the lowly Washington Senators, but had everything to do with the sheer magnitude of the blast. On that date, in the fifth inning of the first game of a double header, Mantle hit a home run that just missed clearing the facade in right field. Had it done so, he would have been the only player in baseball history to hit a ball completely out of Yankee Stadium. It was estimated at the time that the ball missed clearing the facade by just eighteen inches. If it had not been impeded and kept traveling, mathematicians estimate the ball would have traveled approximately 600 feet. Mantle's power was already the stuff of legend at the time. In 1953 he helped coin the term "tape measure home run" with a prodigious 565-foot home run in Griffith Stadium. Nearly three weeks later, on June 18, 1956, Mantle became only the second player in history to hit a ball out of Tiger Stadium. Mantle capped the 1956 season by winning both the Triple Crown and MVP Award at season's end. Offered here is a rare program from the first game of the double header against the Washington Senators on May 30, 1956. The program has been neatly scored in pencil to record the Yankees' 4-3 win and dutifully notes Mantle's three-run home run in the fifth inning. This is the first program from that game that we have ever seen and one that is sure to be a key addition to any advanced Mickey Mantle collection. The program (6 x 10 inches) remains in remarkable Excellent to Mint condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $711.00
