Circa 1950 Original Baseball News Photo Collection - Many Hall of Famers and "Action" Shots (122)

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,303.50

This large collection of 122 original baseball news photos dates from the late 1940s through the early 1950s, with the overwhelming majority dating precisely to 1950. A total of fifty-four photos feature at least one Hall of Fame player, including Jackie Robinson (4), Joe DiMaggio (2), and Ted Williams (2). Nearly half of the photos depict action scenes (sliding into second base or home plate), while ten percent are photographic montages. A few of the action photos are taped together in a manner that allows the photos to be stacked "accordion style"; when unfolded they present a stop-motion sequence of the play unfolding. Twenty-six of the photos are dedicated to the World Series and capture both game action and pre-game poses. Approximately seventy percent of the photos are accompanied by their original paper news caption, which both date the piece and identify the players. Highlights: Jackie Robinson at bat, Jackie Robinson sliding into second, Jackie Robinson receiving his 1949 Silver Slugger Award from Ford Frick, Ted Williams sliding into second base, two photos of DiMaggio sliding (second base and home plate), the famous Charles Conlon photo of Ty Cobb sliding into Jimmy Austin, numerous actions shots from the 1950 World Series between the Yankees and Phillies, and three images of Pee Wee Reese sliding. Sizes range from 2.25 x 3.75 inches to 7 x 9 inches, with the vast majority measuring 7 x 9 inches or just slightly less. Approximately ten percent of the photos have been trimmed to their current dimensions. Most of the photos display normal minor flaws common to working press photos, including, but not limited to, light-to-moderate creasing, edge tears, and tiny border chips. In Very Good condition overall. Accompanying the 122 original news photos are thirty-one additional wire photos (the news caption is actually imbedded within the photo) dating from the same time period. Total: 153 photos (122 original news photos and 31 wire photos). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,303.50
