Circa 1937 Large-Format Joe DiMaggio/Yankees Display Photo - From DiMaggio's Personal Collection
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $711.00
Enormous museum-caliber, extremely artistic color-tinted photograph of Joe DiMaggio, Tony Lazzeri, Frank Crosetti, and Yankees team owner Jacob Ruppert posing together in front of the dugout at Yankee Stadium, circa 1937. We are calling this a photo (for lack of another word) but it is clearly much more elaborate and substantial than the term "photo" usually suggests. It is an elaborately produced photographic art piece, obviously intended for prominent public display. This photo originates directly from Joe DiMaggio's personal collection and was purchased by our consignor (at the time for $950) at the highly publicized DiMaggio auction in 2006. As such, it is accompanied by a letter of provenance signed by both of DiMaggio's granddaughters. A label from the DiMaggio auction also appears on the frame. It is interesting to note that DiMaggio, Lazzeri, and Crosetti had strong ties beyond that of being teammates. All three players were not only of Italian descent, but all had been born and raised in San Francisco and starred in the Pacific Coast League before their contracts were purchased by the Yankees. This photo is notable both for its size and color accents, making it an especially significant DiMaggio display piece dating to one of his first few seasons in pinstripes. The photo (39 x 29.5 inches), printed on cardboard stock, displays only minor surface blemishes, including a few light scratches and abrasions (mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy and in no way affecting its tremendous display value), otherwise in Excellent condition. Framed to total dimensions of 41.5 x 31.5 inches. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $711.00
