1933 American League All-Star Team Original News Photo - PSA/DNA Type 1

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $592.50

Original Acme Newspictures photo of the 1933 American League All-Star team posing together at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Twenty-eight team members are pictured, including manager Connie Mack, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Lefty Grove, Bill Dickey, Joe Cronin, Tony Lazzeri, Charlie Gehringer, and Lefty Gomez. 1933 marked the inaugural All-Star Game, which, as noted on the original paper caption affixed to the reverse, was referred to at the time as "The Game of the Century." The game was not originally intended to be an annual event but it proved so popular with fans and players alike that both Leagues quickly agreed to make it a permanent affair. The American League defeated the National League in the 1933 midsummer classic with Ruth, fittingly, hitting the first home run in All-Star Game history. The proprietary stamps of both "Acme Newspictures, Inc." and "Ref. Dept. - N. E. A." appear on the reverse (Acme Newspictures was a division of the Newspaper Enterprise Association, which was one of the nation's first news syndicates). Also located on the reverse is the date stamp "Jul 11 1933" (the All-Star Game was played on July 6th). This is one of a small selection of extraordinary Type I photos from the Acme Newspictures photo archive consigned to this auction. Valuing original photos (especially extreme rarities that are unique or nearly unique) is naturally subjective, but these never-before-offered photographs really are "the best of the best." All are offered with nominal reserves and the auction process (as always at REA) will determine the proper value level. The photo (9 x 7 inches), which offers exceptional clarity, has been trimmed along the left border and displays a number of light creases throughout. In Good to Very Good condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $592.50
