1920 Boston American Newspaper -"Ruth Signs With Yankees"

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $7,110.00

Landmark issue of the January 6, 1920 Boston American newspaper announcing Ruth's signing with the New York Yankees. The front page headlines declare "Ruth Signs With Yankees" and "Huggins Declares Deal With Home Run King Completed-Boston Fans Up In Arms Over Babe's Sale." The historical significance of this piece is matched only by its tremendous visual appeal. This is a rare instance when a framed newspaper qualifies as an extraordinary display piece worthy of even the most advanced collection. Featured below the headline is a large portrait image of Ruth that is accompanied by the caption "$100,000 Star New Idol Of Broadway Fans." Boston owner Harry Frazee had actually sold Ruth to the Yankees eleven days earlier; however, the deal did not become public until January 3, 1920. Despite Ruth's previous comments to reporters stating that he would not sign with the Yankees, this newspaper confirms the sad news for Red Sox fans. What is especially interesting is the fact that even at this early stage of Ruth's career (1919 was his first full season as an everyday player) he is already referred to by the paper as the "greatest slugger of all time." This is an outstanding piece of baseball history marking both the rise and fall, respectively, of the Yankee and Red Sox baseball dynasties. This piece originally appeared as Lot 814 in Robert Edward Auctions' April 2006 sale, where it realized a final sales price of $12,760, which remains a record price for any post-1900 newspaper sold at auction. It has proudly graced the office wall of the winner (where it received far more response from visitors than any artwork or other item on display!) who is now redecorating and so has reconsigned it to this auction. The paper (17 x 20.5 inches) is in Very Good to Excellent condition overall, with a minor diagonal tear along the right border. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 25 x 28.5 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $7,110.00
