1916 Baseball Trophy - Identical to the 1911 New York Giants World Championship Trophy!
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $592.50
Highly decorative silver-plated baseball trophy dating to the 1916 season. The design of the trophy features a baseball supported by three crossed bats, within which is intertwined a laurel wreath, resting on a circular base. What makes this trophy all the more special is that it is the exact same design as that presented to members of the 1911 World Champion New York Giants. While the 1911 Giants trophies were crafted in sterling silver by Dieges & Clust, this example was produced by E. G. Webster of Brooklyn, NY, based upon the hallmark stamped on the bottom (also stamped on the bottom is the number "291"). The engraving on one side of the ball reads "1916/Runner Up/Mercantile League/Won By/Peet Bros.," while the other side is engraved "Donated By/Rawlings MFG. Co./St. Louis Mo." This is one of the most attractive baseball trophies we have seen from the era and it is no wonder that John McGraw chose this design when ordering trophies for his club five years earlier. The trophy (9 inches high; base diameter of 5.5 inches), which has been professionally cleaned, displays a few very minor dings, none of which detract from its overall Excellent to Mint appearance. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600.
