1921 Babe Ruth Original News Photo - PSA/DNA Type 1

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,014.50

Original news photo of Babe Ruth as a member of the New York Yankees in 1921. Ruth is pictured in his home pinstripe uniform as he strikes a batting pose on the sidelines. Given the date stamp on the reverse ("Mar 31, 1921"), which was two weeks prior to opening day, it seems clear that this photo was taken either at spring training, or at one of any number of scheduled exhibition games the club normally took part in as it made its way back north. Ruth was just about to begin his second season with the Yankees and this photo obviously finds him in good spirits as he smiles for the camera. Photos of Ruth during his early years with the Yankees have always been highly prized by collectors and this example is both exceptional and rare, and one that we have never seen before. Located on the reverse are a "Reference Dept. - N. E. A. " stamp, the aforementioned date stamp, and a few editorial pencil notations, one of which reads "Babe Ruth." (N. E. A. stands for Newspaper Enterprise Association, which was one of the nation's first news syndicates.) This is one of a small selection of extraordinary Type I photos from the Acme Newspictures photo archive consigned to this auction. Valuing original photos (especially extreme rarities that are unique or nearly unique) is naturally subjective, but these never-before-offered photographs really are "the best of the best." All are offered with nominal reserves and the auction process (as always at REA) will determine the proper value. The photo (7 x 10 inches) display few tiny edge tears and a minor surface wrinkle near the top border. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,014.50
